Chapter Eight

When Javier arrived at her hotel lobby early the next gray morning, she was already fully dressed, still wearing his jacket, and waiting for him. The smile she gave him lit up the whole room, maybe even the whole city. She just looked absolutely happy to see him, and it just made his chest feel warm.

What was it about a smile that managed to light up a woman’s face? On Mindy it made her glow, made her eyes dance and her lips seem all the more kissable.

He barely managed to sleep last night, thinking about that kiss they shared on the Boulevard Saint-Michel and the promise that she made.

I’m in.

No two words in the English language sounded more beautiful to him. And there was the kiss. It was a scorching-hot kiss that kept him warm even in the evening, when he finally realized that Mindy still had his jacket. Even without it, he still felt very hot and bothered.

“How was class?” she asked him like they were already in the middle of a conversation.

Javier actually inhaled deeply in anticipation of her just coming near him. He could tell that she just put on perfume, he could smell it lingering around her. He was hit with the uncontrollable urge to kiss her, which he was pretty sure was caused by her scent. Some of the women he’d met here in Paris were never without their perfume, and he’d encountered a variety of smells. Mindy’s was light and floral, one he never could have noticed if he hadn’t searched for it.

Without even thinking about it, he leaned in to give her a kiss—only to back out at the last moment and quickly kiss both her cheeks lightly in the regular Parisian greeting. For all his talk of casual relationships, Javier was the one who was floundering and thinking of perfume and kisses.

“I breezed through my lecture today because I was thinking of this breakfast buffet,” he joked as Mindy looped her arm around his to lead him to the dining room. “My students thought something was wrong, but it’s just breakfast.”

“You teach?”

“Sometimes.” He shrugged. “Business Analytics for first-year students. They’re bored, but I’m not.”

“I bet you make the most interesting teacher.” She chuckled. “And I hope you brought Tupperware. We’ll need snacks.”

“Will we?” he asked. “Where are we going?”

“Home of everyone’s favorite Impressionist. I booked us tickets to Giverny!” She wiggled her hands like a jazz singer for added pizzazz.

“So…we’re going to see what a full-on Monet looks like.”

Mindy’s face immediately went dead, although Javier could see her lips were fighting to hold in her laughter. Why was she trying not to laugh?

“Oh my god,” she finally said, laughing. “Another Clueless joke. What is happening? I’m so sorry, Javier, I didn’t mean to laugh.”

“Why not?” he asked, completely confused. “It was a joke.”

“But yesterday when you said…”

“I’m not a complete hermit, I’ve seen the movie.” He tried to cover up his embarrassment when he realized what he’d said yesterday, and the real reason why she’d started laughing.
